Milwaukee Road No. 261: New River Adventure
Goodheart Productions
PO Box 47131
Chicago, IL 60647
In 1994 a newly restored locomotive tackled the awesome challenge of
moving a 31-car passenger train through the curves and up the grades of
the old C&O main from Huntington to Hinton, WV for the annual fall
excursion. This was the most impressive performance yet from Milwaukee
Road 4-8-4 #261. Her tall drivers were not intended for this duty, but
she achieved success. You’ll see her in all the landmark locations along
the line, making her way through colorful fall foliage. You’ll see aerial
pacing up the New River. You’ll hear the engineer narrate a raucous, wheel-slipping
cab ride as he works. You’ll also see footage of earlier New River steam
operations with ex-Reading 4-8-4 #2101, former C&O 4-8-4 #614, ex-Nickel
Plate 2-8-4 #765 and side by side running of 765 and ex-Pere Marquette
2-8-4 #1225 during the 1991 NRHS convention. 56 minutes, live audio. GOODHEART
